| Prof.
N. Rangabashyam, Former Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology
and Proctology and Clinical Professor of Surgery, Madras Medical
College and Government General Hospital, Madras has been a pioneer
in the field of Surgical Gastroenterology and Proctology in India.
He was first appointed as Professor of Gastroenterology in India
in November 1974. He was the first to start a separate department
and the first to start the M.Ch. (Surgical Gastroenterology) degree
course in India. In addition, he started the Ostomy Department in
the General Hospital of Madras and established the first Enterostomal
therapy Diploma for nursing sisters in this country. As an academician,
he has over three decades of teaching experience both at the undergraduate
and post-graduate levels. He has conducted various workshops and
public awareness programs on Gastro-Intestinal diseases in India.
He has been closely involved with conducting Regular Medical Education
programs all over India
His contributions on Colitis, Bowel Cancer, other Gastro-intestinal
Cancers, Portal Hypertension and Bowel disease in the Tropics have
had a major impact throughout the world. He has contributed and
published various articles on Liver Surgery, Pancreatitis, Ileal
and Colonic problem and Laprotomy. He is one of the pioneers in
pancreatic hepatobiliary surgery in India.
In recognition of his contributions, in 1987, he was elected as
the President of the Association of Surgeons of India. He was in
addition elected President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology
in 1983 and the President of the Ostomy Association of India in
1995. Presently Patron in Chief, Ostomates India. He was appointed
as the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India, by former President
of India, Mr. R. Venkataraman and is a Consultant Surgeon to India’s
Armed Forces Medical College.
He has played a key role in bringing in the FRCS Edinburgh Examination
to be conducted in India since 1995. He has been elected as the
National Representative for the Edinburgh and Paris meetings of
the Federation of Surgical Colleges. Being a surgeon, for his pioneering
efforts in Gastroenterology, he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship
of the Royal College of Physicians presented to a surgeon.
For his yeoman contribution in the fields of surgery and medicine
he has received wide recognition both in India and abroad. To mention
a few - he received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award,
1982; The Pandalai Oration Award 1982; The Warner Oration award
1984, and delivered the Dr. R.V.Rajam Oration, 1987; Sir Stanford
Cade Lecture of Royal College of surgeons of London, 1987; Sir A.M.
Ismail Oration of the Malaysian College of Surgeons of Kuala Lumpur,
1990; The Stuthers Lectures of the Royal College of Surgeons of
Edinburgh Overseas meeting, 1991. He has given innumerable lectures
in many countries abroad, and has been visiting Professor of Surgery
in Moscow, Russia, United Kingdom and United States. He has published
numerous publications in national and international journals. He
also contributes chapters in the Oxford Textbook of Surgery and
in the Recent Advances in Surgery series.
He has been elected as a Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of
Great Britain and Ireland and of the Academy of Sciences in India
and Academy of Surgeons, Singapore. He is a fellow of The Distinguished
Surgeons Society of James IV Association. In addition, in June 1995,
he was awarded The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Gold Medal,
the most notable and coveted awards for any surgeon worldwide. He
has been conferred the D.Sc (Hon. Causa) from The Tamil Nadu Dr.
M.G.R. Medical University. More recently, in December 2000, he added
to his many honours, the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons
of England. Inaugurated many Continuing Medical Education Programmes.

Received the Gastroenterology Excellence Award for the year 2003-2004
in recognition of his contribution to medical education in particular
to surgical gastroenterology.
Received Paramacharya Award from Guru Samarpanam organized by Call
Teacher’s Association of various disciplines
Received Bheeshma Award from The Ragavendra Educational Society
Adhoc Committee Member of the Medical Council of India.
National Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India)
Prof. N. Rangabashyam son of Late Dr. Natesan and
Mrs. Vittobai was born in Thiruvanamalai. He had a divine opportunity
to have Dharshan and Aksharabyasam by Shri Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi.
Since Then, Prof. N. Rangabashyam has periodic visits to ashram
right till today. So also he had personal interview and blessings
of Shri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi and was invited to Whitefield
for the inauguration of the hospital. He has taken interest in the
activities of His holiness Shri Sankaracharya’s Medical Wing.
He had been in the panel of selection staff of the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
and Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow.
He was guide and examiner for PhD for the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical
University, Cancer Institute, Chennai and Christian Medical College,
Ludhiana.
Public Contribution :
The Dr. N. R. Research & Digestive Diseases Education Trust,
founded by Prof. N. Rangabashyam has over the years, been conducting
various primary health and awareness programmes for the benefit
of the general public. These public awareness programs focus on
prevention of Peptic Ulcer Diseases, Hemorrhoids, inflammatory and
infectious diseases of the colon and rectum. The importance of high
fibre / vegetarian diets, ills of smoking and alcohol related problems
are some of the other issues discussed in such forums. During such
programs the Trust invites eminent surgeons and prominent individuals
from the society to increase public awareness in the aforementioned
areas.
Contribution to Rural Surgery :
The Association of Rural Surgeons was formed under the President
Ship of Prof. N. Rangabashyam. The primary activity of the Association
is to conduct free workshops, seminars and teaching programs to
update the knowledge of rural surgeons. The primary objective of
the programs is to train rural surgeons to perform major surgeries
with the basic facilities available. This has resulted in rural
surgeons acquiring knowledge of current surgical techniques and
optimizing the surgical treatment provided to the rural public at
an affordable cost. Today, Prof. N. Rangabashyam is using his good
offices to popularize health insurance policies in rural areas through
this Association. Thanks to the efforts of the Association many
rural areas in states as far as Assam and Mizoram have benefited.
The Dr. N. R. Research & Digestive Diseases Educational
Trust plays an active role in sponsoring such workshops
both in large cities as well as in rural areas.
