Dr. A. K. Venkatachalam is a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon in Chennai ( Madras). His medical training was done in India and the UK. He completed his basic Orthopaedic training in New Delhi. He then underwent higher Orthopedic training for four years in Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester where he worked as a specialist registrar. He got a sound exposure in all super specialties of Orthopedics like Joint replacements, arthroscopy, Spinal surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic surgery, Hand and foot surgery and trauma. He went on to publish several articles in International medical journals. After his return to India he has been working as a consultant in corporate private hospitals. He has headed the department of Orthopedics at a regional referral hospital in Oman and Dubai, UAE. He has worked at centers of excellence in Belgium, UAE, Oman and the UK.

His teaching appointments include the post of an Assistant Professor at the Chettinad medical college, Tamil nadu, India. He has been invited to present Guest lectures at the prestigious Tawam hospital in Al Ain, UAE and other centers in India. He has headed research and development for a company in the orthopedic implant industry and still provides valuable insights for new products.

He has pioneered High flexion Knee replacements, Gender specific knee replacements, unicondylar mobile bearing partial knee replacements, bilateral knee replacements. Recently he achieved the distinction of being the first Indian surgeon to perform the "Proxima Hip replacement.

Knee surgery procedures performed are minimally invasive High flex knee replacements, unicondylar replacements, Gender specific knee, revision surgery, High tibial and femoral osteotomies, arthroscopies, ACL Reconstruction, cartilage surgery.

Hip surgery procedures are Total Hip replacements, hip resurfacing, Birmingham Hip replacement, Proxima hip. He has extensive experience in treating acetabular and pelvic fractures.

His shoulder practice consists of both open and arthroscopic procedures. Arthroscopic subacromial decompression, Rotator cuff repair, Mumford procedure Bankarat's and SLAP repairs are to name a few operations that he performs.

He contributes articles to several news, papers, journals and magazines. He has been interviewed by British TV channels like Channel 4, CNN IBN for his experience in treating overseas patients from the UK, USA and Canada. He participated at the International medical tourism Expo in London 2006.
